About Author

Statesman, inventor and diplomat, Benjamin Franklin is heralded as the founding father of the United States of America. Born in Boston on January 17, 1706 to Josiah Folger and Abiah Folger, the second wife of Josiah. Earlier intended for the clergy, Benjamin was then apprenticed to his brother, a printer. Benjamin began writing anonymously for his brother’s newspaper. An ensuing quarrel resulted in Franklin running away in 1723 to Philadelphia, where he bought the ‘Pennsylvania Gazette’, which would become one of the American colonies’ major newspapers. By 1748, Franklin had made enough money to retire from business. From there on he concentrated on science and inventing. His inventions include the Franklin stove and the Lightning rod. He also became more active in politics becoming clerk of the Pennsylvania Assembly (1736-1751), a member of the Assembly (1750-1764), and deputy postmaster for the Colonies (1753-1774). Franklin lived mainly in London where he was the colonial representative for Pennsylvania, Georgia, New Jersey and Massachusetts. On his return to America, the war of independence had already broken out and he threw himself tenaciously into the struggle. In 1776, he helped to draft, and was then a signatory to, the Declaration of Independence. Franklin was also involved in many public projects. He was responsible for reorganizing the postal service to make it efficient and profitable. He also founded the American Philosophical Society, a subscription library and, in 1751, the Academy of Philadelphia, which later became the University of Pennsylvania. These achievements are testimony to the fact that public service for him, deserved priority. In keeping with this intent, he helped draft the Declaration of Independence and was the oldest member of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 that wrote the Constitution of the United States of America. Arguably, even after his death in 1790, it can be said that Benjamin Franklin’s most important invention was himself. His modern capitalistic spirit is a symbol for America, as the land of enterprise and opportunity.
